Was I overcharged by a taxi?

The ride is over, the number is higher than you expected, and you have no way to tell whether that is traffic, a longer route, a surcharge you did not know about, or something else.

That uncertainty is the actual problem. Most fares that feel wrong are correct, and the ones that are wrong are usually indistinguishable from the ones that are not — which is precisely why disputing them goes nowhere.

First: was it high, or was it wrong?

These are different, and separating them is most of the work.

A fare can be legitimately high because:

  • Traffic. Under any tariff with a time rate, a stationary vehicle accrues money. Twenty minutes in a jam is a real charge, not a trick.
  • A surcharge applied. Night rates, airport pickups, luggage, tolls, booking fees, public-holiday rates. Most cities have several, and most passengers know about none of them.
  • A minimum fare. Short rides often cost more per kilometre than long ones, by design.
  • The route was longer than the map's. Roadworks and one-way systems make the direct line unavailable more often than people assume.

A fare is wrong when:

  • The meter was not running, and the price was named at the end
  • The rate was set to a class the vehicle is not licensed for
  • A surcharge was applied that does not apply
  • The route was materially longer than necessary and the extra distance is on the bill
  • The total does not match the meter reading

The first list is far more common than the second. A tool that treats every high fare as theft is useless — and, when you take it to a driver or a regulator, it makes you look like someone who does not understand the tariff.

What actually counts as evidence

Not much of what people bring to a fare dispute is usable.

The gap in that table is the reason this is hard. You can find the tariff, and you can photograph the meter — but the number that connects them, how far you actually went, is the one thing a passenger has never had.

Every fare calculator online predicts a route you did not take. None of them measure the ride that happened.

Measure it while it happens

Your phone has a GPS receiver. Recording a journey with it gives you the missing half of the argument: a distance and a duration that do not come from the vehicle being questioned.

Meterless does this — you enter your city's tariff once, press start when the vehicle moves, and it applies the same accumulator rule a meter uses to the ride actually taken. It is an estimate for the passenger and never a meter: taximeters are legally controlled, sealed and certified instruments, and this is a second opinion rather than a replacement for one.

Any GPS recorder gives you something, though — even a plain activity recording gives you a route and a distance to compare against the tariff by hand.

The important part is that it happens during the ride. Afterwards, all you have is a memory of a journey and a number you disagree with.

Expect the two to differ, and by more than you think

A meter reads an odometer: wheel revolutions times a calibration constant. A phone reads position. Two different physical quantities, two different error profiles.

On one measured ride, a vehicle's own odometer came out 16.8% low against two independent methods that agreed with each other to 0.6%. A ratio that clean points at gearing or tyre size, not at fraud — but it means an odometer and a phone can sit 15% apart with nothing wrong at either end.

So: a small gap proves nothing. Anyone presenting a 5% difference as evidence of overcharging is overreaching, and will be told so.

And the GPS estimate reads low by construction — discarded low-accuracy fixes, tunnels contributing nothing, jitter filtered out. Which makes the direction of the disagreement informative. A phone reading higher than the meter had to overcome a systematic bias to get there.

If you think something is genuinely wrong

During the ride

  • Ask what the rate is, early and neutrally. "Is this the day rate?" is a question, not an accusation, and it changes the situation more than anything you can do later
  • If there is a meter, check it is running
  • Record the journey on your phone
  • If a route looks wrong, ask about it while there is still time for the answer to matter — roadworks are a perfectly good answer

At the end

  • Photograph the meter, and the vehicle's licence or plate number
  • Get a receipt. In most licensed systems you are entitled to one
  • Pay, then dispute. Refusing to pay converts a billing question into a confrontation, and you will lose the evidence advantage you just built

Afterwards

  • Complain to the licensing authority, not the driver — that is where the published tariff has force
  • Include: the licence number, date and time, route, the amount charged, the applicable tariff, and your measurement
  • For a booking app, use its in-app dispute flow. They adjust fares routinely and with far less friction than a regulator

Do not do this

Do not argue about a number you cannot support. Producing a phone and asserting the meter is broken, over a 6% difference, is how a reasonable complaint becomes an argument.

Do not treat a measurement as a verdict. The meter is the legally certified instrument. A GPS estimate is a reason to ask a question, not a ruling.

Do not escalate at night, alone, in an unfamiliar place, over a small amount. Genuinely: pay it, note the details, and complain in writing tomorrow. That path works and the other one can go badly.

The realistic outcome

Most of the time you will find the fare was correct and you will understand why — which is worth the effort on its own, because the unease is the thing that spoils the ride.

Occasionally you will find a real discrepancy, and you will have a distance, a duration, a route and a tariff to put next to it. That is a complaint someone can act on, rather than a feeling.
